END OF THE ROAD

Finally the end of the Road

This has been quite a journey for me as I really thought I would not like doing this.....however it has proved itself and I did enjoy most of the tasks. I discovered so many new things and new words that were quite foreign to me before. I will probably go back and revist some of the sites (that is if I can remeber all the passwords)!!!

I found the 9 weeks to do 23 of the 2.0 was sufficient. Everyone at work agreed that each task took quite a bit of time and as we work at a busy site found it was difficult to do any of the tasks at work, so all of my 2.0 Learning had to be done from home which did take up a lot of my personal time and the use of my computer. However overall I am glad that I did it. Thanks

E-BOOKS

WEEK 9 (Thing 22)
I have had an account with NetLibrary for ages using it mainly from the library for customer's looking for classics etc. Had to scratch around to find my password which I eventually found as I am doing this from homebase. I looked at the Audio books as this is of particular interest as I select books for a blind customer. 10 Audio books can be taken at a time but seems like no IPod or MP3 downloads yet. Does anyone know how long one can have an e-book couldn't find this info anywhere on the site and if one of our customers download a book does it appear on their library account....haven't seem this yet?
Had a look at Kindle which I think is going to be popular as it is so portable ie on the bus or train....but what will this mean to libraries!!!

PODCASTS

WEEK 9 (Thing 21)

Clawing my way to the end............... PODCASTS!!!!
Had a look at the 3 suggested Podcast sites and then went on to look at other podcasts by doing a good old Google search and came across Jamie Oliver's site so thought I would have a peep. Quoting his words he says "my podcast is food for your ears". I am the worst cook ever but I do like eating and so when my eye caught the words Smoothies, now this is different I love them and they can't be that hard to do.......can they???? So enjoyed listening to this site.
http://smoothiecast.co.uk/

I can see that Podcast are handy tools for Libraries (perhaps interviews with authors or book reviews), Teachers, Sermons, Medical and then just ordinary things like recipes, tips etc. They can be any length and if one gets bored you can always watch the (radio??) patterns which are amazing.

UTUBE

WEEK 9 (Thing 20)

As UTube were updating when I tried to sort out an account things were going slow....very slow. The first 2 Videos I watched were junk so decided to do a search. Did the usual Port Elizabeth thing as it is the theme of my blog.
I found several that I liked and will try post one on my blog as soon as my UTube account is sorted out.
Question: Why do the videos go in stops and starts?
I read somewhere that there are 30 million people viewing everyday!!!
Must say I was a bit reluctant to do this as I thought it wouldn't appeal to me and could waste quite a bit of my time but I was instantly hooked once I found something I was interested in.
I came across a "killer" tortoise video it was chasing a cat made me I wonder how Lynx my "Killer Kat" would match up, this other cat wasn't doing toooo good.
I suppose using Utube videos to advertise libraries - to put out the message that libraries are worth a visit, are upmarket and running with the times.

WEB 2 AWARDS 2007

WEEK 8 (Thing 19)
I went straight for the best - the short list and it was so nice to see some names that I actually recognized ....compliments to 2.0.
Visited LibraryThing again as I have a log in now, will probably use this one most often to get good reads for the "Library to You" (housebound) customers that I select books for.
Moved onto Squidoo (loved their little squid/eye thingy), going to redo our kitchen so did a search for "lenses" on this and also for 'free 3D kitchen software' and found I was the first person to search for this, there were 2 hits to view.
Some good sites for library users could be LibraryThing (naturally), Google Docs and ZohoWriter for being accessible from library free internet computers. Yelp for travellers, although it did look very USA.

Was just going to stop and close page when I notice 43 Things and as we are doing 23 Things thought I would have a look at this and it is quite sweet. Sort of a place to set down your goals and see if there are others striving for the same goals. Also good to put your goals into writing, as it feels more real!!

ZOHO

WEEK 8 (Thing 18)

I like the concept that I can just log in to ZohoWriter anywhere and access my documents etc. Also that I can work off-line. Had a look at the templates.....good selection. What amazed me was the fact that the spell check does over 40 odd languages including Zulu!!!!! WOW
The Toolbar is clear cut and great having extra features. Had a bit of a hunt for the Spread Sheet but found it eventually. All in all a handy site and I will favourite this one. Thanks 2.0.

WIKI

WEEK 7 (Thing 16 & 17)

Can't believe Wikipedia has been going since the mid 1990's as I have only seen it in the past 2 years. I think they are great if you are working within a group with a common purpose ie project or such, also socially. The Commoncraft show demo ( I found excellent and simple) with your 3 main tools Edit, Save and Link. I would look at Wikipedia with eyes wide open because of it's free for all nature. Would go to other sources and compare especially with important things that need to be accurate. Vandalism, Spam and False information a bit of a worry!!!
Read about Wiki's usefulness in libraries as in Bulletin Boards, Community items and Community Interests. Then Book Reviews which customers can add to and comment on, thought this really great and useful. Also sharing ideas and things to do across the library world, agree with "why invent the wheel" when someone else has done a good job.

Had a look at Sandbox good idea to have a play before letting novices onto the real thing. Having a your own log in is probably a good idea after reading that although you can edit without logging in, if you do it this way, your information could be publicly recorded.
Don't think I would create a Wiki at the moment but I do read them and understand them better now.

LIBRARY 2.0 and LIBRARIES

WEEK 6 (Thing 15)

I have seen a lot of exciting things working my way through 2.0 some I will use and others probably at this stage won't. I think libraries and staff will have to keep up with technology as it is on a roll now and not going to stop, with new inventions coming up everyday.

We may even (hopefully not in our time as we would seriously be out of work) have virtual libraries where we virtually (if that is the word) walk to the shelves, choose a book and download, all from the comfort of our 'lazy-boy chair' which would have a new name like 'x-l-b-v- pod 2020', standing for xtra-lazy-boy-virtual pod 2020.

I think there will be some resistance and in the next few generations we will live in both worlds as there will always be people who want to hold a book and feel the excitement of stepping into the pages. (Another possible reality to look forward to one day). Others may be in a hurry to get information and so technology and fast information will be just what they want.

So exciting times are ahead for us and as long as people still have choices all should be well. My Mother told me a story once about the first time she saw a car she ran screaming down the street shouting "there's an elephant coming" and when she grew up she drove and sat in an elephant called a Ford (colour...you've guessed it Black).

Technorati

WEEK 6 (Thing 14)

Had a look at this site and found out that "" are necessary as hits with "" and without "" are very different using the advanced search. ie 6916 as to 547 (Blog search), 675 as to 125 (Tags search) and 837 as to 350 ( Blog Directory search). So a good idea to use inverted commas.

There are also 4 search settings to use and 20 languages.

I discovered that the 'top blog' has 793,627 reactions WOW!!!

Also Top Videos/Movies and News are also a feature.

Felt I didn't want to be 'Official" so didn't claim my blog. A bit worried about "web crawlers". Sound creepy!!

Bookmarks/Tags

WEEK 6 (Thing 13)
I took one look at this and thought .....beyond me!!!!
So had a look at the links you gave and watched the UTube tutorial on Bookmarks and Tags by Lee LeFever!!! and it all started to made sense so if you are as confused (as I was) this is a good start. Found out that Bookmarks/Tags are like favourites but with much, much more scope.
The nice thing about http://del.icio.us/ is that if you have lots of bookmarks or favourites saved on your computer, it will help to keep them in order and easy to use. It also is great if you use more than one computer as you simple log into the delicious website to find your favourites. Had a look at the Tag Cloud (cute word) and PLCMCL2. At the moment my favourites are all in order and I don't add anything unless it is something I really need so didn't open an account but I may do at a later stage.

Back from Sydney

Hey I'm Back home, so can start my blog again. Just something short as I want to get some sleep before the Rugby tomorrow morning. I am a total AB fan but as they are not in the running I now have a 2nd chance with the Bokkies (being the PE chick that I am).

Anyway, thought that as I have just flown in from Aussie a few hours ago and sleepy, sleepy I would just post a picture of LYNX - my killer cat.
Jessie has the scars to prove this!!!

Port Elizabeth's "Horse Memorial"

In my blog I thought I would do short snippets of my Hometown. I am living in New Zealand now so this is a trip down memory lane for me.
So far you have seen the Library and Queen Victoria and so the "Horse Memorial" which I loved as a child is next.

Erected in honour of Horses and Donkeys who perished and served during the Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902 and and erected in 1905.
Standing 16 hands 2 inches, the figure of the soldier is life size.
This great statue is said to be one of only three memorials in the world dedicated to horses so quite special.
Inscription
“The greatness of a nation depends not so much upon the number of its people or its territory, as in the extent and justice of its compassion.”

Interesting Site

PLAY Week

WEEK 5 (Thing 10)

Busy looking at Online Image Generator sites and have had a lot of fun. Try http://www.kitt.net/php/3dface.php - your face generated.

Click on Green

Did the above but it lost it's glow and glitter en route to my blog so have to find out how to get it right.

(Thing 11)

My next step was to look at LibraryThing and as I really didn't even know this existed. I was amazed....who thinks of all these things!!!! Had a look at some of the comments (hundreds listed). People are so excited and in awe of this site. So opened an account and will go back later. Will definitely send the link http://www.librarything.com/ to my family and friends who are always asking me for good reads.

(Thing 12)

Next Stop was Rollyo don't know if I would use this but can see that if you do lots of searches this would be great to sift out the curd and whey.

Have added a link to a great tech site and cute item about little Roomba....look on my Technology post

Bloglines and Geonet

WEEK 4 (Thing 9)

Had a look at 'search tools to find feeds', Feedster, Topix.net etc. Then did a search on Bloglines for earthquakes in NZ and found lots to read. I am a real fan of the Geonet website which came up in the search. On going to the link I discovered the RSS symbol on the Geonet website which I must say I had never even noticed before and wouldn't even have know what it was for.

Technology

WEEK 3 (Thing 7)
Have had to think about this one as I am not the most technical person..... Suddenly a thought, would my 'beloved' iRobot (Roomba) fit the bill and I hope it does as I love this little cleaning wonder to bits. With the click of 2 buttons off he/she goes around the house, navigating chairs/table legs, corners and managing not to fall down steps. I can even set laser boundries for places I don't want it to go to. When it finds a "spot" it does a spin on the area and when it sometimes gets stuck it calls out for help. It can also go back to it's charger base all on it's own. Read what wikipedia says about my little 'friend'. Hopefully Santa is going to bring me Roomba's big brother "Scooba" who knows how to wash floors!!

Interestingness

I found this very exciting.......Flickr's most interesting photos.
Description: "explore and discover some of Flickr's finest"
Done on a calendar format any Day or Month. What a thrill if one of your pictures was there!!
Hope my link works
I also created a calendar using my pics......a great gift for Xmas

Jessie on Flickr

My dog Jessie is now on Flickr. She has perfected her dive and her dive range is half way across the width of the pool. She is a great freestyle swimmer and our neighbours think we are active marathon swimmers and really get great use out of our pool.......but it is really only Jessie ploughing up and down, she has real thunder thighs!!!

Oh my Gosh

WEEK 4
I've got my Blogline account set up and that was easy. Also have some 24 feeds (went totally overboard). Didn't have any other blog addresses on hand but understand how to add them and websites to my feeds.
Didn't quite understand the final steps, got to 'share' and found
http://www.bloglines.com/public/USERNAME
was this what you wanted me to do? I thought perhaps my bloglines name should be in the 'username' section. Along the way I found the Unshelved and www.bloglines.com/acl.elgar@gmail.com not opening.

With all that taken care of, gasp gasp...... I have found 2 pics of the Port Eliabeth Library which I thought I would share with you. By the way for anyone that hasn't heard of PE it is on the East Coast of South Africa, has the most fantastic beaches and great climate although called the "Windy City" but really the wind only blows after midday....really!!!

Good 'old' P.E.

WEEK 3

Went on the Flickr 'tour' and my, my how interesting.....what haven't they thought of. So did a search for my hometown PE and what a treat...pictures galore...even found the city library.

http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=port%20elizabeth%20library&w=all

Queen Vic was a landmark meeting place for us teens and the pigeons loved her too.....balancing on her head. The library had those old fashioned ladders which could slide along the front of the shelves, they were soooo long, a sure Health and Safety no, no today.

Everyone is still busy looking at sites and blogging away. Some found the start up route confusing and perhaps bullet point instructions would have helped but once setting up their blogs felt a feeling of accomplishment and I could hear the sighs as they sat back in their chairs and viewed their blogs. So all is well in the 2,0 world at St Heliers Library.

2nd Thoughts on Blogging

WEEK 2 (Thing 4)

Being the chatterbox that I am, I am going to find it hard to "let my fingers do the talking".
I was amazed that when facing the monitor I was lost for words. So driving to work, brushing my teeth and between TV ads ( I am a Shortland Street fan), I constantly churned over what on earth I was going to say.

I must say that the office is in a 'buzz" over 2.0. and the 23 steps which flip flop to 43 steps every now and then.

So, have had a look at Bebo, Myspace, Facebook and thought "very interesting" and I may go back and try them out.

Everyone is asking what is this "PE or Port Elizabeth" thing and quite simply it is the City where I was born and raised and I suppose where I became a "hen" although I would rather be a "chick".

More on that later..............PE I mean not the 'hen" thing.

Port Elizabeth Chick has landed

Well here I am doing "la Blog". I never thought I would do this but have been asked to do a 'pilot' and thought what the heck I would give it a go..... (I have already run out of things to say) so sitting here with my hand over my mouth and my heart thumping......ah well ....the weather here today is a bit dull..... and now I think I will go and have a cup of tea and lie down for a bit as this is all very overwhelming!!!
